About us

Hey Mama Wolf is dedicated to providing exceptionally crafted yarns made in Europe to fiber enthusiasts around the world. It's at the heart of Hey Mama Wolf that our yarns are as sustainable as possible. We believe that investigating the origin of our wool is vital to ensuring both animal welfare and sustainability. Locally-sourced wool can help support landscape conservation and revive local textile industries. As such, we offer a variety of options for the eco-conscious crafter, including organic, locally-made, zero-waste, and GOTS-certified yarns.

Wool is the most amazing and beautiful material in the world. It's insulating, warming, anti-static, water repellent and it steadily grows back. Sheep play an important role in landscape conservation for example on the dykes and heathlands. We work closely with shepherds, traditional spinning mills and dye workshops to make the best yarns out of local wool. Short transport distances add to the sustainability aspect of your knitting experience.

Yarns

Our yarns represent the best of Europe - plant dyed wool from Germany, Merinos d'Arles from France and a true Tweed from Ireland made with Irish wool. We work with traditional spinning mills to support the local textiles industry. Our aim is to support the shepherds with a secure income while providing yarns that a delight to knit with to the eco-conscious crafter. Our yarns always have an interesting story to tell.

Ylva

Ylva is yarn made from German wool. Every step of the process, from sheep to plant-dyed skein, is done with sustainability in mind.
The fiber is collected from small sheep farms in Northern and Eastern Germany and is then plant-dyed in Hessia (Germany). The dye house thoroughly checks the yarn for color fastness, ensuring that they will stand the test of time.
With Ylva, we actively support small German sheep farms, making sure to buy the fleece from farmers at a fair price. This is a rustic wool which makes it well suited to long-lasting garments. Ylva is a versatile yarn and is ideal for textured patterns, brioche, or colorwork. Ylva was Hey Mama Wolf's first yarn and has many fans all over the world.

Mokosh & Skadi

Mokosh and Skadi are made from Merino d'Arles GOTS-certified wool. With a 21 micron count it's the softest wool native to Europe. This rare sheep breed hails from southern France and, due to the high crimp of its fleece, yarn spun from this wool has pockets of trapped air, providing insulation and resulting in warmer garments. The wool from this breed is exceptionally fluffy, bouncy, and soft.
Our favorite GOTS-certified mill then spins and dyes our exquisite organic wool, allowing us to have everything under one roof. This reduces our carbon footprint and ensures that the wool meets our high standards for quality and sustainability. GOTS certification is important to us, as it guarantees the best for the environment, sheep, and even the people involved in the production.
Mokosh and Skadi are lightweight, lofty, and have a fine sheen. This makes it ideal for knitting sweaters, hats, and shawls.

Beara

Beara - A Tweed Yarn as Mystical and Powerful as the Nature of Ireland!
The namesake of this yarn, "Cailleach Bhéarra" or the "Hag of Beara," is a figure from Irish mythology and folklore. She is often depicted as an ancient, powerful goddess or wise woman, deeply connected to the Irish landscape and the cycles of nature. We’re pretty sure she knows a thing or two about sheep and wool!
Beara is made from Irish wool and UK alpaca and is spun in Ireland at the historic Donegal Yarns mill. This keeps transport routes short and ensures that Irish sheep farms benefit from a steady demand for their wool. Small farms, in particular, often struggle to bring their wool to market profitably. That’s why Beara blends wool from different breeds, supporting local shepherds and preserving Ireland’s rich wool heritage.

Material: 70% wool, 30% alpaca

Yardage: 245 yds/ 3.5 oz

Needle: US 3-6

Gauge: approx. 20 sts = 4"
